The History Behind The Beautiful Name!
Our country has three primary names which are used interchangeably. The first is 'India'. Second, 'Bharat' and the third being 'Hindustan'.
The Constitution states 'India' and 'Bharat' as the names of the country when it mentions: 'India, that is Bharat shall be.....'
The name India has been derived from the Indus river as "the land beyond the river Indus". This was constantly mentioned by Greek and Byzantine rulers. In older English, the name was referred to as 'Indie'. Consequently the name transformed to 'India' in the new English.
'Bharat' was the name of an early Aryan king who had fought and won the 'Battle of the 10 Kings'. The land occupied by him since then has been refered to as 'Bharata Varsha' - Varsha being a part or division of the land. King Bharata has been mentioned in the Mahabharata.
The name 'Hindustan' came from ancient Persian reference to the land beyond the Indus. Sanskrit indu "drop (of Soma)", also a term for the Moon has sometimes been used as a derivation source. Initially, the land was referred to as 'Industan' i.e.the land of the Indus ('Indu - river, Sthan - place')
Among these, the common thread that becomes self-evident is the relevance to the river Indus which had contributed to the sustainability and flourish of the Harappan and consequently the powerful Aryan settlers- all of which have contributed to the beautiful name for the beautiful land today we call as our Motherland.
